Elon doubles down on Metro Austin area

Opening Hype: Elon Musk unveiled Terafab on March 21, a $20 billion chip fabrication joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX and xAI targeting 1 terawatt of annual compute output, enough for up to 200 million AI chips per year. The initial 2-million-square-foot R&D facility breaks ground near the Tesla Gigafactory in Del Valle, but Musk confirmed the full-scale plant requires thousands of acres and at least 10 gigawatts of power, with multiple Texas sites still under active consideration.

Why It Matters: Musk called out Samsung's Taylor fab by name as a critical existing supplier, crediting it alongside TSMC and Micron while making clear current global chip output falls far short of Terafab's demand. That direct acknowledgment puts Williamson County at the center of the world's most ambitious semiconductor buildout before a single acre of Terafab's permanent home is decided.

Bigger Picture: Taylor spent years positioning itself as a semiconductor destination with Samsung's $17 billion investment, and that bet is now paying off in ways no one fully anticipated. If Terafab's permanent megacampus lands anywhere in the Central Texas corridor, Williamson County's existing chip workforce, infrastructure investment, and Samsung supply chain relationships make it a natural gravitational center for whatever comes next.
